In this piece, “The Cathedral at Munjoy Hill” spotlights one of Portland’s icons; The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Located at the intersection of Cumberland Ave and Franklin Street, this church was built in 1866, although construction was delayed due to Portland’s great fire that wiped most of the city that year. The gothic structure was finally completed in 1869, with the largest steeple measuring 204 feet tall, making it the tallest building in Portland until it was just recently surpassed in 2023. The Cathedral still sits prominently at the base of Munjoy Hill, adding to the historic skyline of Portland Maine. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
